Wu Cheng’en, born in 1506 (1506-1582), was a well-known Chinese novelist and poet in the Ming Dynasty. His most famous fiction, Journal to the West, has been enjoyed by generations. The fiction is one of the Best Four Novels in the Chinese literature. An English translation of the fiction is produced by Arthur Waley and is entitled Monkey.

Cheng’en was born in Huai’an. 400 years after he died, his grave and many artistically works were identified in the town of Huai’an. Local government reconstructed his birth house on the original location in 1982 and renovated his grave in order to commemorate him.
